Critiquing Irish Music
I'm a huge fan of Irish folk music, as well as a student of Irish Gaelic, but I have to admit that this post by Bill had me laughing out loud yesterday. You can't excerpt this stuff -- you just have to go read it. Oh, and sorry for the cryptic post in Irish, Bill; I had meant to go back and post the translation and completely forgot about it.

I had one good Irish drinking song tape once, and it stayed in the car of an ex boyfriend lo those many years ago. I think this one is it everytime I see it, then I read the names of the songs and think otherwise. Still, great fun music, Irish drinking songs.
I would like to know Gaelic, but unfortunately I don't want to take the time to learn or study it. Pretty limiting, really. It isn't going to just pop in my head one day like the info downloaded into people in the Matrix :) Wouldn't *that* be cool!
What's your favorite Irish folk song?

Ah, there's so much of it I like, in both English and Irish. Bill mentions "Mountain Dew" from the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, and if you like your music political, "Bold Fenian Men" by the Wolfe-Tones is a great anthem. They also have another lively song on the same album called "Paddle Your Own Canoe", which is a fun to sing along with if you can understand the words. "Galway Bay" and "Galway Shawl" are lovely songs, and "Whiskey in the Jar" is the one I have pretty much memorized.
In Irish, "Moll Dubh an Ghleanna" by Altan is very pretty, as is "Éirigh a Shinéid". I also love Lunasa and the Chieftains for traditional instrumentals. I should also mention a Twin Cities local band, the Gaels, who are an exceptionally good traditional band.
Hmmm ... time to pop the MP3 discs into the car stereo tomorrow! Go raibh maith agat!(Thank you!)

Hey Captain Ed!
What inspired this post is a C.D. that my grandfather had. Bill and I now have an appreciation for good Irish music. Here's to you the Parting Glass!
